Fashion Jewellery – What’S Hot For 2009

Update: January 23rd, 2012

Jewellery is like anything else in fashion, it changes with the seasons. 2008 was all about wearing less jewellery but making bold statements with one or two show-stopping pieces. Statement jewellery looks like being big in 2009 as well but now we're talking even bigger and bolder. Geometric shapes and ethnic-inspired pieces are really big this year, with an emphasis on rich, bold colours. Prominent stones and gems are also very popular in this year's collections so it could be time to dust off some of your Mum's old chunky diamante jewellery and hit the streets.

Here's our complete low down on what's hot in the world of fashion jewellery for 2009:

  • Tribal jewellery is going to be huge this year. Big beads, ceramics, leather and seeds will all be common place and will perfectly compliment bold ethnic prints that will dominate this summer's high streets.
  • With the economic crisis causing caution and the price of gold increasing, alternative (cheaper) materials are on the agenda. Silver, and even brass, look to be big favourites this year.
  • Black and white never go away and will continue to play their part in 2009. Colours for spring and summer will be yellows and greens with red coming back in for autumn.
  • Bracelets are the number one accessory for this year, and the bigger the better! Simple chains, chunky bangles and cuffs all made regular appearances in the major collections. Cuffs worn on the wrist or forearm, and multiple chunky bracelets worn on the same wrist are the way to way them.
  • If you're feeling brave and want the wow factor, wear colours that clash in your clothes and jewellery. Clashing has been singled out as one of the biggest fashion trends of the year by fashionistas and designers alike. Do away with the dull, drab and dowdy and get to work with the bold and brash.
  • It's dangley earrings all the way in 2009. Big bold and dangley are all the rage.
  • The butterfly looks to be the motif of choice for this year's fashion. Flowers will also play a big part.
  • Jewellery made from environmentally-friendly materials, and fair trade accessories are set to take 2009 by storm. We expect to see a lot of handcrafted jewellery as well as the industry moves away from mass-produced jewellery.

Extravangence is out this year as we all batten down the hatches until the recession passes. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself though.  Have fun making your own jewellery, customising and experimenting with what you've got, and get down to your local flea markets to see what bold and beautiful bargains you can pick up.
